The problem

Exams still run on paper, manual marking, and hope for early grades.

Every term, schools rebuild the same fragile process from scratch: creating, reviewing, printing, securing, and storing paper scripts, tracking results by hand, and trusting that integrity is upheld.

Paper, start to finish
Creating, reviewing, printing, securing, and storing scripts by hand. Every step is slow and easy to get wrong.
Priced for markets that are not the Caribbean
International platforms charge in the neighborhood of $25 per student. Most Jamaican schools do not need to budget for that.
Online tools with no real integrity tooling
Most online test tools do little to stop a student from switching tabs, pasting an answer, or even having dual log in.
No built-in accommodation
Students who need extra support, like text to speech, are often left to manual, inconsistent workarounds.
The solution

One platform. Every kind of assessment. Built for how a real school actually works.

From a five minute pop quiz to a full formal end of year exam, Smart Assess Ja carries every assessment a school gives, on one secure, affordable platform.

One digital record, start to finish
Every exam is created, reviewed, delivered, and stored in one system. No printing, no lost scripts, full audit trail.
Priced for the region it serves
A fraction of what international platforms charge, structured to get cheaper as a school grows.
Integrity tooling built in
Fullscreen lock, tab-switch detection, single-device login, and kiosk mode. Included, not an add-on.
Accessible by design
A text-to-speech accommodation any teacher can turn on for a student who needs it, no separate software.
How it works

Built around the roles already inside a school.

Every account, from a student sitting the exam to the administrator who runs the school, has exactly the access their role needs and nothing more.

Student
Teacher
Supervisor / Head of Department
School Administrator

The review chain is configurable, not fixed. A school picks the workflow that matches how it actually operates.

Direct PublishA teacher writes an exam and publishes it straight to their class.
or
Department ReviewA supervisor reviews and publishes on the teacher's behalf.
or
Full Multi-Stage ReviewTeam lead creates, senior lead vets, supervisor publishes.
Every kind of assessment

Not just final exams.

Pop quizzes, class tests, weekly tests, homework, take-home tasks, group projects, and full formal final exams all live on the same platform, with the same integrity tooling behind every one of them.

Math notation
Powers, roots, fractions, and Greek letters, not just plain text.
Rich media
Image, audio, and video question support built in.
Flexible categories
Midterms, monthlies, mocks, and end of year exams, each tracked on its own.
One question bank
Teachers build a reusable bank instead of starting over every term.
Self-service mock exams
Students can generate their own practice exam ahead of an upcoming test, built from questions in exams they have already completed and had results released for. Never from a live or upcoming exam, so nothing gets previewed early.
Integrity, taken seriously

Built for the pressure of a real exam, not a demo.

Fullscreen lock and tab-switch detection
The exam knows the moment a student leaves the window, on the web or in the desktop app.
Single-device login
A student can only be signed in on one device at a time. Logging in elsewhere signs out the other session.
Desktop kiosk mode
A native app that locks the machine to the exam, and still detects an attempt to switch away even where the operating system itself cannot fully prevent it.
Offline resilience
Answers autosave locally and sync the moment a connection returns. A dropped connection never costs a student their work.
Accessible by design

Support built in, not bolted on.

A teacher, supervisor, or school administrator can turn on a text-to-speech accommodation for any student who needs it, adding a read-aloud control straight to that student's exam. No separate software, no manual workaround.

Artificial intelligence, on a short leash

AI helps a teacher write. It never decides for a student.

Polish a question
Improves the clarity and grammar of a teacher's own draft question.
Import from PDF
Pulls questions straight out of an existing paper exam instead of retyping them.
A help assistant
Answers general how-it-works questions for visitors and logged-in users alike.
The rule that never bends Every suggestion is reviewed by a human before it is used. AI never grades a student, never flags an integrity concern on its own, and never makes a decision about a student without a person reviewing it first.
Beyond schools

Organizations get a platform too.

A certification body, a professional association, or any organization running a one-off assessment can publish it for anonymous respondents with just a code and a password. No school roster, no long setup, no dedicated IT.

Security and trust

Data protection is not an afterthought here.

Row-level security, enforced by the database
Access rules are checked by the database itself, not just by application code.
Mandatory two-factor authentication for staff
Every teacher, supervisor, and administrator account is protected by more than a password.
Isolated by school
Each school's data lives in its own separate environment. Nothing is shared across schools or organizations.
Aligned with Jamaica's Data Protection Act
Data is handled with the same purpose limits, security, and breach-notification standards the Act requires.

Steven Gordon
Founder

A mix of technical, business, and problem-solving. Steven saw a real gap in how Jamaican schools run exams, informed by a computer science background and a genuine love of building software, and has been building Smart Assess Ja full time for the past few months.

Why Jamaica. Jamaica already has the examination culture, the educational infrastructure, and the growing digital readiness to lead in modern assessment technology. Smart Assess Ja is being built locally, for the realities of Jamaican schools: reducing paper dependency, strengthening exam security, and simplifying administration.

Why now. The classroom has gone digital. The examination process has not. Schools need a faster, safer way to assess students, and the technology to do it is finally ready. Start in Jamaica. Build for the Caribbean. Scale for the world.
